SW: Why do you think your Necroscope series has reached such great heights of popularity?

BL: If I could answer that one, Stanley . . . you can bet it’s something I would have done thirty years earlier! But I’ll try to answer it. The hero of the series, Harry Keogh—the Necroscope himself—could be any one of us. We guys would like to be him, and the women would like to be loved by him. Harry has this dark fascination for us: He knows things, does things, has been places we can never know, do, go. But he’s no superman. He has had his oh-so-hard times, and we’ve been through them with him. That’s Harry’s secret—not merely that he’s mastered the Mobius Continuum, or that he can speak to dead folks, but that he’s human, very human—which makes us all care for him. And that’s what turned the trick, I believe, that I’d created someone we could believe in and feel for.
